Academy & LYC round-up 1 2018

The Leicestershire Young Cricketers and Academy started their summer programme with mixed fortunes.

The Under 13s got their season underway against Cambridgeshire but suffered a six-wicket defeat. Leicestershire won the toss and elected to bat and from their 40 overs made 159-8. Angus Owen, batting at number 3, made 44 and there were contributions from Sam Wood (25) and Arush Buchake (20).

George Royale got an early wicket to give his side a chance but a second wicket partnership of 56 and a fourth wicket partnership of 57 got Cambridgeshire within touching distance. No. 3 Harry Symonds was unbeaten on 64 seeing his side to victory.

The second game was a much closer affair; unfortunately the Under 13s were just edged out by Staffordshire. Again the side batted first and made 203 before being bowled out in the 45th over.

The innings was in real danger at 150 for 9 but a 53-run last wicket partnership between Will Begy, who top scored with 53, and number 11 Pahan Suwandaarachchi (6) helped push the total up. Earlier in the innings Captain Arjun Sisodiya made 42 and Sam Wood 33.

Staffs got off to a good start adding 61 for the first wicket, four relatively quick wickets made the game interesting with Staffs 100 for 4 but Reeve Evitts swung the momentum to Staffs hitting a run a ball 61. Leicestershire took two late wickets but it wasn’t to be as Staffs got home with three wickets to spare.

The Under 14s has also got off to a difficult start. They had a thrilling game to start their season. Batting first against Derbyshire they made 210 before being bowled out. Jai Modhvadia scored the first century of the LYC season but lacked support with extras the next highest scorer with 32.

Derbyshire reached 146-3 and looked in control, however, four wickets fell for 23 runs to bring Leicestershire right back into the game. Derbyshire wicket-keeper Kieran Pell, batting at five, remained unbeaten and his unbeaten 70* saw his side to a two-wicket win.

The next game for the Under 14s was a real learning curve as they were heavily beaten by Northamptonshire. Northants racked up 284 in 50 overs for the loss of just 5 wickets. Before the Under 14s was bowled out for 107 in 30 overs. Aryan Patel the only batsmen to make a substantial score with 51.

LYC Under 15s has had a lot of cricket already and have come away with a real mixed bag of results, playing 6 games, winning 3 and losing 3. The majority of the teams fixtures have been in a Twenty20 tournament based at Worksop College where the side came second losing to Yorkshire in the Final.

The side beat Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Durham on the way to the final with some impressive individual performances. Josh Hutt returned figures of 3-12 against Notts, Rehan Ahmed took 3-20 against Durham, 4-18 against Derbyshire and 3-14 against Lincolnshire.

Finally, the Sub-Academy have been in fine form, winning all three Twenty20 fixtures played against Loughborough Lightning, helping them prepare for the Kia Super League.
