Agathangelou stars against former club

Andrea Agathangelou made a composed half-century but his former club Lancashire dismissed Leicestershire for 207 on a truncated first day of the LV=CC match at Emirates Old Trafford.

Agathangelou shared 87 inside 21 overs for the sixth wicket with Ben Raine (26) either side of lunch after County had been reduced to 78-5 by new-ball duo Kyle Jarvis and Tom Bailey.

The Division Two pacesetters wrestled back control as Bailey struck for a fourth time to remove Agathangelou, Faulkner took a hat-trick, and Jarvis collected his 50th LV=CC wicket of the season.

Leicestershire wanted to make inroads in the late final session but although the floodlights were on, they had now taken over from the natural light and the players were not able to return to the field.

Play is scheduled to start 90 minutes later on each day to aim to attract more spectators after work hours but those plans were affected by a 40-minute rain delay immediately after Mark Cosgrove had won the toss and elected to bat.

Umar Akmal was handed his Leicestershire first-class debut earlier as overseas player Clint McKay was rested while Atif Sheikh also came into the team.

There was a nice moment for Angus Robson shortly after play got underway as he collected the three runs required to take Leicestershire to the 1,000,000 mark in their first-class history from the third ball of the day.

Lancashire named two spinners in their XI but it was the seam of Bailey (20-2-69-4), Jarvis (14-0-73-2) and Faulkner (15-2-52-3) who did all of the damage.

Jarvis dismissed openers Niall O’Brien (14) and Robson (23) caught behind by Alex Davies, while Bailey had Ned Eckersley (2) caught by Paul Horton at first slip, Akmal (13) held at the wicket and Cosgrove, who made 26 on his 31st birthday, lbw.

Agathangelou, who represented the Red Rose between 2011 and 2014, and Raine went to the break on two apiece with the score on 82-5 and the pair played well after the interval to fashion a recovery.

While Raine dropped anchor, Agathangelou found the fence on ten occasions as he progressed to a 56-ball 50, his first for Leicestershire.

The impressive Bailey, who picked up his maiden Championship five-for against leicestershire earlier this season, ended Agathangelou’s stay courtesy of another catch for Davies and Faulkner then claimed his treble.

The left-arm seamer had Raine caught at point by Simon Kerrigan with the last ball of his 12th over, the 43rd of the innings, and Jigar Naik (9) and Charlie Shreck (0) lbw with the first two deliveries of his next.

It was the first hat-trick for Lancashire in the Championship since Jimmy Anderson completed the feat in 2003. As part of that treble, Anderson dismissed two people who went on to play for Leicestershire, Darren Robinson and Will Jefferson.

Rob Taylor (20 not out) and Atif Sheikh (5) helped to bank a batting bonus point but Jarvis returned to end the innings shortly after ‘supper’. The seamer found the edge and Davies completed his fifth dismissal with a good catch.

Umpires Martin Saggers and Steve Gale assessed conditions before Lancashire got their innings underway and the quality of the light was not sufficient for any more cricket, so play will resume at 12.30pm tomorrow.
