Ahmed sets sights on World Cup glory

Running Fox Rehan Ahmed has had a tournament to remember as he is set to represent England in the ICC Under-19 World Cup final, as they reach that stage for the first time in 24 years.

Leg spinning academy graduate, Ahmed kicked off his collection of staggering bowling performances against UAE where he claimed 4 wickets for 30 runs in his opening game of the competition.

The 17-year-old continued his incredible form into the quarter-final match up against South Africa where he played his part in limiting South Africa’s batting attack to 209, with bowling figures of 4 wickets for 48 runs from his full 10 overs. This magnificent result with the ball in hand led England to a mouth-watering semi-final tie against Afghanistan.

England Under 19’s then set Afghanistan a total of 232 to chase down for the win, following a tough battle at the wicket against a strong bowling outfit.

Afghanistan needed 20 runs from the remaining two overs to enter the final with four wickets remaining, as Ahmed took the ball in hand in the penultimate over of the contest.

What followed was nothing short of a heroic over from the Leicestershire man as he swung the pendulum in England’s favour following three crucial wickets in the over, conceding just one run in the process leaving his teammate, Joshua Boyden, to bowl the game out as England sealed their passage through to the World Cup final with a 15-run victory.

Ahmed and the young England squad will face India following their victory over Australia in the second semi-final on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, in the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup on Saturday, February 5, 2022.

Congratulations to Rehan on an incredible tournament so far - the Running Foxes wish you the best of luck in the final!
