Burgess signs for Leicestershire

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is pleased to announce the signing of batsman and wicket-keeper Michael Burgess on a contract until the end of the season.

Burgess, who was born in Surrey, has a first-class average of 42.00 and has been part of the successful Loughborough MCCU side.

The 21-year-old posted totals of 43 and 34* for Loughborough MCCU in first-class games against Nottinghamshire and Hampshire at the start of this season and then scored a terrific 116 against Kent.

That was not a first-class match at Canterbury because only the first two university games of the season have that status but Burgess faced a first choice Kent attack including Matt Coles, Mitchell Claydon, Darren Stevens, Ivan Thomas and Adam Riley.

Burgess has since scored half-centuries in the recent Second XI Championship games against Warwickshire and MCC Universities and also made 64 not out in a T20 game against Unicorns. Burgess will wear the squad number 20 at Leicestershire CCC.

Leicestershire CCC Head Coach Andrew McDonald said: “Michael is a highly promising young player who has played well in our Second XI and deserves his opportunity. Michael will be in the squad for the NatWest T20 Blast game against Nottinghamshire Outlaws tomorrow night.”
