Carberry, Hill & Parkinson post fifties for Foxes

REPORT | Leicestershire CCC versus Nottinghamshire CCC, pre-season friendly, day 2 of 2

Michael Carberry, Lewis Hill and Callum Parkinson all recorded half-centuries on day two of the pre-season friendly against Nottinghamshire CCC at the Fischer County Ground.

Carberry posted 52 before Hill top-scored with 82 and Parkinson made 57 not out as Leicestershire CCC posted a healthy 349 for 9 - including two wickets with batsmen retiring out - in conditions that were considerably cooler and more overcast than the first day.

The skipper opened the batting with Paul Horton, and was positive from the outset. Carberry was particularly ruthless finding the cover point boundary five times in Mark Footitt’s first five overs.

The openers reached their fifty partnership as Horton drove England international Jake Ball to the ropes at cover. Horton (25) was the first wicket to fall as he was bowled by Harry Gurney with the score on 77, the left armer bringing one back to hit the off stump.

County reached the 100 mark in the 27th over and the captain reached 50 from 86 balls, his innings including six fours and a maximum. Carberry lost partner Neil Dexter soon after; the number three batsman drove firmly at Footitt and the quick bowler took a stunning one handed catch in his follow through.

In the second over after lunch Samit Patel trapped Carberry lbw for 52. Mark Cosgrove and Lewis Hill came together and started to rebuild gradually, with Cosgrove unleashing a couple of trademark cover drives.

The partnership was broken by Luke Wood as the left arm quick bowled Cosgrove for 20. Eckersley joined Hill at the crease and in testing conditions the pair put on 50 for the fifth wicket. Hill was the second Leicestershire CCC batsman to reach the half-century milestone. Hill’s 50 came from 72 balls, and contained seven boundaries.

Hill and Eckersley went into tea with the score 234-4 and their partnership worth 89, and they progressed to 82 and 33 respectively before retiring out.

That sparked a flurry of activity with Zak Chappell, Ben Raine and Dieter Klein dismissed in and around the time that the new ball was taken after 70 overs.

Parkinson played a number of eye-catching strokes in reaching 50 from 62 deliveries (7x4, 1x6) while Javid (17 not out) offered valuable support in an attractive 85-run partnership.
