Leicestershire CCC can today announce experienced bowler Chris Wright has signed a new contract which will take him into a fifth season as a Fox.
Following his arrival from Warwickshire ahead of the 2019 campaign, Wright has taken 154 wickets in Leicestershire colours across all formats, with 132 of those claimed in first-class cricket.
The 37-year-old recorded career-best figures of 7/53 during the Foxes’ Championship visit to Gloucestershire in 2021, while he secured his 500th first-class victim during Leicestershire’s clash with Derbyshire later that summer.
It was to prove a memorable fixture for Wright, who also registered his career-high score of 87 with the bat.
As well as being a consistent threat in red-ball cricket, the veteran seamer also showed his nous with the white-ball across this summer’s Royal London Cup, taking 17 wickets at 19.47, while registering his List A career-best figures of 6/35 against Notts Outlaws.
Preparing to enter his 20th season as a professional, Wright has amassed 540 first-class, 121 List A, and 53 T20 wickets respectively, while scoring 3,905 runs across the formats.
His importance to the team has grown year-on-year, with the likes of Ed Barnes, Tom Scriven, Roman Walker and Michael Finan all benefitting from the extensive knowledge shared by Wright on and off the field.
Discussing his extension, Wright said: “I am delighted to extend my stay with the Foxes for another season. I’m focused on playing for as long as I can, as well as using my experience to help in the dressing room, especially with our younger bowlers.
“I was really pleased with my contribution in helping the team reach the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup, and although this year was ultimately disappointing in the Championship, there were some good signs moving into next year.
“We have a young squad and have added some exciting signings, so I am sure 2023 will be a good year for Leicestershire.â€
Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, added: “Chris is a true professional. He is well-established within the Club, and we are really glad that he has committed his future to Leicestershire.
“Significantly, he’s a leader in the changing room and we are looking forward to seeing him helping the team again next year."
