Clive Inman: 1936 - 2022

Leicestershire CCC is saddened to learn of the passing of former batsman Clive Inman, who died earlier this month at the age of 86.

An exceptional middle-order batter, Clive played on 295 occasions for the Club between 1961 and 1971, scoring 13,499 runs across first-class and List A cricket, making 19 centuries in the process.

Born in Colombo in 1936, the left-hander started his cricketing career at St. Peter’s College, captaining the side in both 1954 and 1955, before moving to the UK in 1959.

He later joined his fellow countryman Stanley Jayasinghe at Leicestershire, debuting against the touring Australian side in 1961 when he contributed 30 and 45 not out.

Clive enjoyed his most prolific season in 1968, scoring 1735 runs at an average of 36.91, while he also became a world-record holder after scoring a half-century in just eight minutes against Nottinghamshire in 1965.

During his spell with the county, Clive also played against Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, and India, remarking Dennis Lillee and Sir Garfield Sobers as some of his toughest ever opponents.

After departing Leicestershire, Clive played seven List A matches for Derbyshire in 1973, while in September 2018 he became one of 49 former Sri Lankan players to be honoured by the country for their services prior to Sri Lanka became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Clive’s family have shared details of his funeral, with the service to be held at Loughborough Crematorium on Tuesday 24 January 2023 at 12.30pm.
