Leicestershire and Rutland over 50s won a remarkable game against Essex to win the ECB National Competition by one wicket at Kibworth CC on Sunday.
County’s final pair put on 60 as the team chased down 168 to win, last man Nick Newman scoring an excellent 37 not out. He was ably supported by number 10 Jon Reynolds, who made 12 not out.
Opening bowler Duncan Kingham took 2-25 and man of the match Newman claimed 3-40 with former Leicestershire wicket-keeper Neil Burns making 51 for Essex.
Openers Tony Pridmore (30) and Tim Moult shared 42 for County but although Raja Hayat made 31, Essex seized control.
Newman hit a four and six early in his knock but the duo were generally happy to knock the ball around and rotate the strike.
In the 42nd over, the duo benefited from a delivery that went for five wides and a no-ball that was hit for four.
The target came down to eight off the final three overs and Newman hit a six and single before Reynolds hit the winning run.
Leicestershire won with 13 balls to spare before receiving the trophy from former England captain Mike Gatting.
