Leicestershire were denied the opportunity to secure a third LV=County Championship victory of the season because of horrendous weather at Wantage Road.
Only 45 minutes of play was possible at the start of the final day as the extremely poor forecast proved to be correct.
Needing just one more wicket to end the Northamptonshire second innings with Steven Crook unable to bat due to an ankle injury, Clint McKay (21.2-9-35-3) struck second ball to have Ben Sanderson lbw.
Their total of 162 left County 116 to chase and the team reached 30-1 in 6.4 overs before the weather closed in, so the team were just 86 runs away from a 23-point haul.
Leicestershire got off to the perfect start as Lewis Hill (10 no out) struck a boundary first ball but lost fellow opener Angus Robson lbw to Rory Kleinveldt for 10.
Niall O’Brien was promoted to bat at number three and struck a glorious back foot drive for four and was unbeaten on five when the precipitation arrived.
Umpires Alex Wharf and Mike Burns monitored the situation but the rain would just not relent and Leicestershire had to settle for twelve points when the day was abandoned shortly after 4pm.
Although it was a bitterly disappointing outcome, Leicestershire can take a lot of positives from another terrific performance as they enter the final month of the season.
The team have three LV=CC fixtures left with season starting with the visit of Gloucestershire on Tuesday, September 1. Please note that this game will start at 10.30am.
