Leicestershire County Cricket Club has announced that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced South Africa international Janneman Malan to stay at home, meaning he will sadly not link up with the Foxes for Vitality Blast this year.
The club, player and his representative have made every possible effort to make the move happen but the tireless work has been frustrated by the pandemic - namely travel logistics and a 14-day quarantine period.
Malan’s contract has therefore been frustrated and it has been mutually agreed that it will be best to try again for the 2021 season, subject to domestic and international schedules and a No Objection Certificate being issued.
Leicestershire CCC Chief Executive Sean Jarvis said: “We exhausted every avenue in trying to get Janneman into the country but issues out of our control have gone against us on this occasion.
“It is a big blow for us because everyone was looking forward to Janneman playing for us. We would love to see Janneman become a Running Fox in the future and wish him the best over the next few months.”
The Foxes are looking at possibilities for this season’s competition as Head Coach Paul Nixon looks to bolster his squad ahead of the schedule announcement.
Jarvis added: “There is some budget for a signing or two and we have identified some targets, so we will continue to work hard to add to our squad ahead of the start of Vitality Blast.”
