David Munden (1957-2018)

Leicestershire CCC is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and cricket photographer David Munden.

David, a left-handed batsman and leg-spin bowler, represented the club's Second XI from 1975 to 1981.

He toured the West Indies with England Young Cricketers in 1976 in a side that included David Gower, Chris Cowdrey and Mike Gatting.

David’s passion for cricket was evident in the way that he took to photographing the game after retiring from playing. He was a highly popular and much-respected colleague in and around press boxes both at home on the county and test match circuit, and abroad on England tours.

Cruelly, Parkinson’s Disease eventually forced David to retire from the photographic work that he loved so much. Leicestershire CCC held a fundraising testimonial for David at the Fischer County Ground in June 2015.

The Mundens have had a long association with Leicestershire CCC with three other family members also representing the club.

David’s father, Victor, who sadly passed away in September 2016, was a slow left arm spinner who made 228 first-class appearances for Leicestershire CCC. He took 368 first-class wickets at an average of 28.34 and also scored 5,681 runs for the club.

Victor’s younger brothers Donald and Paul - David's uncles - made a combined 54 first-class appearances for Leicestershire CCC, scoring 1,291 runs between them.

Leicestershire CCC would like to pass on its deepest sympathies, thoughts and condolences to the Munden family at this extremely difficult time.

David's funeral service is on Tuesday, April 3 at 3.30 pm at Gilroes Crematorium, Groby Road, LE3 9QG.
