Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce that county cricket will return to Oakham School this season when the Foxes take on Lancashire in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Thursday, May 31.
Oakham School has fantastic facilities for players, officials and supporters with the new BAF Smith Pavilion opened in 2014.
The club has enjoyed many visits to Oakham School in the past, including County Championship and 50-over fixtures against Nottinghamshire in 2007, and another List A game against the same opposition in 2008. The four-day game was a thrilling draw in which current Head Coach Paul Nixon scored 98 and 20 not out while the Foxes emerged victorious in both one-day fixtures.
There have been many other happy memories created in Rutland, including former Oakham School pupil and England seamer Stuart Broad taking his maiden County Championship wicket against Somerset in 2005.
Strong links have remained between the two organisations over the years, including a Second XI match at the ground in 2016. Another connection is through Oakham School’s Director of Cricket Neil Johnson, a former Leicestershire CCC all-rounder who had a successful season with the club as overseas player in 1997.
Leicestershire CCC Chief Executive Wasim Khan MBE said: “Oakham School is a terrific venue that many of our Members will have enjoyed visiting in the past. It is important to take county cricket as far and wide as we can, and this is a fantastic opportunity to take cricket to a new audience in Rutland and surrounding counties.
“The Royal London One-Day Cup match against Lancashire Lightning promises to be an entertaining fixture and we’d like to thank everybody at Oakham School for making the staging of this fixture possible. We would like to take cricket to Oakham School in future years, so this is a great way to start.”
“We are delighted that County Cricket returns to Oakham, hot on the heels of hosting the warm-up matches for the Women’s World Cup last year,” said Iain Simpson, Director of Sport.
“It’s a testament to the exceptional quality of our pitches and sports facilities that we are able to host matches of this calibre at the School. It’s also great to see our relationship with Leicestershire County Cricket Club, where a good number of our pupils and staff are current and former players, strengthened even further through the use of our facilities.”
