REPORT | Leicestershire CCC versus Yorkshire CCC, pre-season friendly, day 1 of 2
Leicestershire CCC and Yorkshire CCC managed to get some useful match practice as preparations continued to step up ahead of the new season.
Despite heavy rain on Sunday, and some precipitation today, the players managed to take to the field for 61.2 overs, which was again testament to the superb work of the groundstaff.
Due to the weather forecast not being great, the day was split in terms of overs with the plan for both sides to bat for 50 overs.
Michael Carberry and Paul Horton opened the batting for a Leicestershire CCC side that welcomed Colin Ackermann back into the fold after a winter playing for Warriors in South Africa.
Carberry and Horton put on 25 for the first wicket before Horton was bowled for 10 by Steven Patterson. The Leicestershire CCC top three was the same as it was against Nottinghamshire CCC with Neil Dexter batting at 3.
Dexter hit two fours through point before becoming the second wicket to fall as he edged a Patterson delivery to Alex Lees, who had safe hands at first slip.
County lost their captain shortly after with Patterson taking his third wicket of the morning, Carberry caught behind by Andrew Hodd for 21.
Ackermann had to acclimatise quickly and was the next wicket to fall, twenty minutes before the lunch interval, bowled by Jack Brooks who returned to the attack for a second spell.
The rest of the batting order was designed to give the bowling group some time at the middle; both Lewis Hill and Ned Eckersley did not bat as they had substantial innings on Friday.
Dieter Klein batted at 6 alongside Javid and the pair played well, both scoring 28. The duo were watchful, rotating the strike while punishing the bad ball. The partnership was broken when Javid was caught behind off the bowling of Brooks.
Adam Lyth took a stunning one handed catch at slip to dismiss Klein. The same man, Lyth played a part in the next wicket as Gavin Griffiths departed without scoring, edging a Josh Shaw delivery to the fielder in the cordon.
At the end of the 50 overs, Leicestershire CCC made 139 for 8 with Raine (8*) and Callum Parkinson (3*) the not out batsmen. Tom Taylor was the other wicket to fall, dismissed for 4 off the bowling of Patterson, who took four wickets in the innings.
Klein and Griffiths shared the new ball for County, and Lyth and Alex Lees took the score to 38 without loss after 11.1 overs when conditions deteriorated.
