Foxes suffer washout in Worcester

Leicestershire’s rotten luck with the weather in the 2016 season continued at New Road.

Today’s scheduled Royal London One-Day Cup match with Worcestershire was a total washout, meaning the sides collected a point apiece.

The team has been affected throughout the campaign but things have taken a turn for the worse recently as barely any play has been possible since the last few days of May.

Of the last nine scheduled matchdays in all competitions, the Foxes has completed two NatWest T20 Blast matches and two Royal London One-Day Cup contests but has only managed 23 overs out of a possible 432 on the other five days.

Heavy rain fell in the region yesterday and that was followed by prolonged periods of precipitation in Worcester this morning.

Umpires Nick Cook and Neil Bainton conducted an inspection at 1pm as at that stage the sun had made a rare appearance.

Another inspection was announced for 2pm to see if there was the potential to play a reduced-overs contest - but a deluge arrived that left New Road under water, so the game was abandoned at that point.

Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes said: "It’s desperately frustrating but you can't do anything about the rain. At one stage we thought we might some sort of game, maybe a 20-over match which we were keen to do so.

"That last huge downpour sadly put paid to that and it’s frustrating for players, supporters, management. That is sometimes an English summer for you."

Leicestershire's Elite Performance Director Andrew McDonald said: "It is not ideal. You want to play cricket but you can't do anything about the weather. It is one of those uncontrollable things.

"We've had two washouts in a row. You can't get frustrated. It's one of those things. We are playing an outdoor sport and when it rains, you can't play."

The Foxes now turn their attention to NatWest T20 Blast and Specsavers County Championship before the Royal London One-Day Cup returns next month.
