Horton steps down as One-Day captain

Leicestershire County Cricket Club can confirm that Paul Horton has stepped down as the Club’s One-Day captain.

The decision was made following consultations with Head Coach Paul Nixon, and Colin Ackermann will captain the side in the Royal London One-Day Cup as well as in the Vitality Blast.

Nixon said: “We have had some good chats over the last few days, and we feel that it is time to go in a new direction.

“There are places up for grabs now and it is time for the squad to stand up and be counted.”

Horton joined the Foxes for the 2016 season and has been one-day captain since 2018, and Nixon thanked him for his efforts as captain of the Foxes’ one-day side.

Nixon said: “We thank Horts [Paul Horton] for everything that he has done in white ball cricket.

“He has got a massive format now in red ball cricket and has still got a huge job and a massive part to play as Club captain, and also to support Colin Ackermann as well.”

Horton said: “After consulting with Nico [Paul Nixon], and with the club at the forefront of my mind, I have decided to step down from white ball cricket which, in turn, will make way for youngsters to come in.

“We want to create opportunities for our youngsters, and I still have a big role as Club captain and I want to help move the Club forward.

“Ackers [Colin Ackermann] has led the T20 campaign brilliantly and has been a good ally to me.

“I will help him moving forward if he needs any help or direction with regards to captaining or communicating with the squad, and of course, I wish him all the best.”

Ackermann, who has plenty of experience of leading the Foxes in T20 , will be captain for the fixture against Northamptonshire Steelbacks tomorrow (May 4) as the Foxes look to finish the 2019 Royal London One-Day Cup campaign in a positive fashion.
