John Hampshire (1941-2017)

Leicestershire CCC are sad to learn of the passing of John Hampshire, who played for the club between 1980-81. John, 76, passed away peacefully after a long battle with illness.
Hampshire was a quality middle-order batsman as well as being an excellent close fielder, and was liked and respected throughout the world of cricket.
He scored 28,059 first-class runs in a tremendous first-class career, the majority of which were registered for his home county, Yorkshire. Hampshire also played eight test matches and three one-day internationals for England.
Hampshire averaged more than 50 in his three first-class appearances for Leicestershire and scored one of his 45 centuries for the club.
He then had a successful career as an umpire both on the county circuit and at international level before returning to Yorkshire as Club President, a role that he took great pride in.
Our condolences and thoughts are with John's family and friends, and everybody at Yorkshire CCC, at this extremely sad time.
