Towards the end of the third day’s play in the match against Kent, Leicestershire CCC’s Chief Executive Wasim Khan attended a party in the Meet arranged for the Friends of Grace Road volunteers.
Wasim thanked all of the volunteers present for their support to the Club and commitment to raising funds for the club.
This is done in a number of ways; by baking the Friends’ legendary homemade cakes, serving at the Friends Cafe in the Meet on match days and selling FoGR 50/50 raffle tickets around the ground at the Club’s NatWest T20 Blast matches.
Monies are also raised by organising the Friends of Grace Road Winter Lunches, the Annual Quiz Evening and other events that are so well attended by fellow Friends and Leicestershire Members and supporters.
Wasim then unveiled a picture that summed up the volunteers’ efforts by stating: “Keep Calm and Bake Cakes”.
The Friends of Grace Road last year donated another £12,000 to the club which has been used to support the restoration of the Maurice Burrows Stand at the top of the Pavilion and Wasim will be unveiling a plaque to commemorate this in the next few weeks.
The Friends are hoping to raise even more money for the club during 2016, but this will not be possible without another great effort and further commitment from even more volunteers.
Wasim appeals to all FoGR volunteers and supporters of the club to help the Friends of Grace Road in their endeavours even if they can only spare a couple of hours every now and again, and particularly calls for more bakers, who are much needed to boost the fantastic efforts of those currently feeding the spectators with cakes for afternoon tea.
The Friends of Grace Road look forward to seeing all spectators in the cafe for two hours in the afternoon on the first three days of each Specsavers County Championship match, at Royal London One-Day Cup games, the Tour match versus Sri Lanka and the England Women’s’ International match versus Pakistan.
