Last Friday night was a great one for the O’Brien brothers and Leicestershire Foxes – and we now want to replicate the superb atmosphere at Grace Road in Thursday’s NatWest T20 Blast home game against Durham Jets.
Niall O’Brien hit three consecutive fours in the penultimate over to guide the team to a terrific victory against Derbyshire Falcons in front of a sizeable crowd at Grace Road.
The ‘keeper ended with 47 off 27 balls, exactly the same amount that younger brother Kevin made on his debut the previous week at Emirates Old Trafford.
Kevin earlier took 1-27 off three overs, combining with his sibling to account for the dangerous Wes Durston. The visiting stand-in captain struck five fours in making 26 off 16 at the start of the innings before Niall took a smart catch standing up to the wicket.
A stand of 76 between Ned Eckersley (39 off 33) and Kevin (31 off 27) set up the chase before Niall and Grant Elliott (21 not out), who put on an unbroken 69 for the fourth wicket, sealed a seven-wicket win with an over to spare.
Kevin said: “It was great to see so many people at Grace Road and we'd like to thank everybody for coming. It was a great win and a good night, so hopefully our supporters will again turn out in force against Durham this week.
“Niall has been keeping well in all formats and has also been batting well. He is a good striker of the cricket ball and he brought us home on Friday night.”
Niall also held a couple of catches off the bowling of off-spinner Jigar Naik, who Kevin thought played a key role in the win by taking 3-23 from his allocation.
“Wickets are key in T20 and if you can continually take wickets in the middle, you can put the brakes on a little bit,” he said. “We took four wickets in four overs, with Jigar bowling really well, and that helped restrict Derbyshire to under 165, which was about a par score.”
* For those who weren’t able to come last Friday but would like to come to the Durham game, advance tickets can be brought for £16 adults and £3 for under 16s online HERE. Please note that adult tickets rise to the price of £20 on the gate. Car parking at Grace Road will again be very limited but you can book a space in advance for £7.50 online too.
