Leicestershire Foxes all-rounder Kevin O’Brien played his 100th One-Day International yesterday in the fifth and final match of Ireland’s series against Afghanistan.
O’ Brien, younger brother of fellow Fox and Ireland international Niall, made his ODI debut in June 2006, taking on England in Belfast in what was also Ireland’s inaugural ODI appearance. He claimed the notable scalp of Three Lions captain Andrew Strauss with his maiden ball.
Since that wonderful start to his international career, the 32-year-old has enjoyed many fine moments in his century of appearances.
His most memorable innings came when recording the fastest-ever World Cup century against England – reaching the milestone from just 50 balls – on his way to 113 (63b) as Ireland secured a memorable three-wicket win in 2011’s showpiece event. He also scored 98* against Scotland in the 2010 World Cricket League Final.
Ireland went into O’Brien’s landmark match in Stormont 2-1 down to Afghanistan after four matches, the first having been abandoned without a ball bowled.
After being put in by Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai, the home side made 265-5 from their 50 overs, largely thanks to Ed Joyce’s marvellous 160 not out off 148 balls and a fifty from Gary Wilson (58), the pair putting on 134 for the third wicket.
Sadly, O’Brien fell for a single after being caught by Najibullah Zadran off the bowling of Mohammad Nabi, but his contribution with the ball was a telling one.
He picked up three key wickets, trapping Rahmat Shah (30) leg before before dismissing Zadran (55) and Mirwais Ashraf (0), caught Wilson and Peter Chase respectively.
O’Brien’s figures of 3-57 helped inspire his side to victory, the tourists falling just short on 254-9 as Ireland levelled the series to cap off a great day for O’Brien.
Leicestershire CCC would like to congratulate Kevin on what is a tremendous achievement in collecting 100 caps, and we look forward to seeing many more great moments for him for both Ireland and the Foxes.
