As part of the Club’s ongoing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy, entitled #FoxesFamily, members of the Leicestershire County Cricket Club Board, and ECB Director Martin Darlow; the Club’s ECB Liaison, will participate in a day’s fasting to join in the community spirit, empathise and better understand the implications of Ramadan.
The initiative was born out of a conversation between Leicestershire County Cricket Club Chair, Mehmooda Duke and its CEO, Sean Jarvis.
“We were discussing our EDI strategy and how Sean had recently observed Lent, and that, as a Muslim, I was now observing Ramadan and fasting.
"As a consequence of these discussions, we then talked to the Board of Directors, who volunteered to fast for a day to get a better understanding of fasting in Ramadan.
"A fast in Ramadan is nil by mouth from sunrise to sunsetâ€
Leicestershire County Cricket Club Chair, Mehmooda Duke
On Sunday, 9 May, the CEO and Members of the Board of Directors will join the Chair and Muslims around the world in a one day fast.
Followers of Islam observe this sacred month and use it as a time of fasting, prayer, reflection and community and it is believed that the spiritual rewards of fasting are multiplied during Ramadan
“Our community is incredibly diverse and this should be celebrated. Last year I visited the Diwali festival and with Ramadan currently taking place, we wanted to appreciate what it means. Consequently we are proud to be supporting Muslims worldwide in their scared month of Ramadan.
“It is a testing time for all who observe, but also a rewarding one as well with their time devoted to their religion.
“We wish all of the Muslim community peace, happiness and a prosperous Ramadan as well as a joyful Eid at the end of the month of fasting."
Leicestershire County Cricket Club Chief Executive, Sean Jarvis
As part of Leicestershire Cricket Club’s EDI strategy, the Club undertook a BIG Cricket Survey to gauge opinion on cricket, and celebrated South Asian Heritage Month.
