Leicestershire County Cricket Club, in association with the High Sheriff of Leicestershire, can today (5 July) announce a new initiative aimed at unifying and celebrating the county’s diverse communities.
Using cricket as a vehicle, the inaugural ‘Connecting Communities’ Hundred-ball match plans to bring together Leicestershire’s diverse community and encourage new audiences of all backgrounds to both support and participate in the sport.
The fixture, which is due to held at Uptonsteel County Ground on Tuesday, 6 September (4pm start), will feature two teams comprising individuals from an eclectic mix of varying backgrounds, including different cultures, religions, business, and government bodies.
Captains for the two teams will be announced in due course.
The day will see Grace Road open its gates and welcome the people of Leicestershire to come and watch the ‘Connecting Communities’ match completely free of charge.
Commenting, Sean Jarvis, CEO of Leicestershire CCC, said: “This fixture will represent an opportunity for all the different parts of our community to come together and enjoy our wonderful game.
“Cricket is described a game for all. We wanted to host a match that does just that, by unifying communities and celebrating the many differences we have.â€
Mehmooda Duke MBE DL, High Sherriff of Leicestershire, added: “Connecting Communities is my theme for my year in office “ so what better to bring people together than with Cricket, a sport which is loved by so many.
“It is an opportunity for lovers of the game to enjoy Grace Road, by either playing or supporting, and watch their friends and colleagues. It promises to be a fun day out for families as we play the Hundred.â€
The fixture will also be a fundraiser to support the Club’s Foundation, which aims to support grassroots cricket across the county.
The event is currently seeking sponsorship and raffle prizes, with the Club encouraging any interested parties to contact Conor Danes via email, on conordanes@leicestershireccc.co.uk.
More information will be announced shortly.
