Leicestershire CCC Pay Respects by Announcing Memorial Garden

The Uptonsteel County Ground is set to host a Memorial Garden for Running Foxes fans to have the chance to remember lost family members and friends.

The Club has been searching for a suitable space to accommodate the Memorial Garden, and we can now confirm that a space has been identified.

To be located to the right as people enter through the Curzon Road gates, initially running half of the length of the car park towards the Foxes Den, the new Memorial Garden is scheduled to open to the public to visit in 2022.

The new space of reflection will feature benches, planted areas and a new Celebration of Life tree that will provide a space for supporters to place plaques of lost ones in remembrance.

Mark Smith, Groundsman at Leicestershire County Cricket Club has been exclusively working on the Memorial Garden, and outlines the plans he has in-store: “We plan on building a 900mm path through the middle of the space, making it accessible for all.

“There will be plenty of features throughout, produced from the recycled timber taken from various parts of the ground to add depth.

“We are also looking at housing a permanent memorial to those lost in the war for people to come and pay their respects.”

The Memorial Garden comes as Members and supporters of Leicestershire County Cricket Club have often voiced their hopes for these sorts of spaces to be available around the ground.

Sandra Clark, Operations Manager at LCCC commented: “It is fantastic news to be able to announce that the Memorial Garden will be open to the public next year.

“This is a feature that we have been looking to add to the landscape of the Uptonsteel County Ground for a while now, and we have worked hard to be able to identify the correct place.”

Clark continued: “I can confirm that work has begun on the Memorial Garden, and we are looking forward to welcoming our loyal Members and supporters into the ground to pay their respects to the lost family and friends.”

Work will continue on the space throughout the autumn and winter months, as well as further ground developments taking place in order to improve the customer experience when coming down to support the Running Foxes in 2022.
