Clint McKay moved to the top of the KFC Big Bash wicket-taking charts as Sydney Thunder made the final for the first time.
McKay (3-44) picked up the early wickets of Tim Ludeman and Travis Head and returned to dismiss Alex Ross to take his tournament tally to 17.
Table toppers Adelaide Strikers, whose only defeat of the group phase was to the Thunder, scored 159-7.
Runs on the board can be an important factor in big games but once Australia international Usman Khawaja got into his stride, there was no stopping the Thunder at the Adelaide Oval.
Khawaja continued his scintillating form in the competition with 104 not out from 59 balls and took his total to 275 in three innings in the process. Two of those knocks have been unbeaten centuries.
The Thunder won by eight wickets with 14 deliveries to spare to book their place in the showpiece game on Sunday.
They will now travel to the winners of the second semi-final between Melbourne Stars and holders Perth Scorchers, which is scheduled to get underway at 8.40am on Friday morning (GMT).
