Niall O’Brien put in a fine performance as Ireland gave Australia a good game in a rain-affected ODI at Stormont.
Australia scored 222-6 from an innings reduced to 40.2 overs with former Leicestershire batsman Joe Burns making 69 on debut.
Burns put on an opening stand of 139 with David Warner (84) before Ireland, led by Tim Murtagh (10-0-45-2) and Andy McBrine (9-0-40-1), pegged the tourists back.
O’Brien was back behind the stumps for Ireland and took three catches before top-scoring with 45 in Ireland’s reply.
Their target was 181 in 24 overs, and O’Brien and Ed Joyce (44) shared 86 for the third wicket, but Ireland were bowled out for 157 with two balls remaining.
