O'Brien top scores but India hit back

Niall O’Brien top-scored in a spirited Ireland performance but India ultimately emerged victorious by eight wickets in the ICC World Cup.

Will Porterfield (67) and Paul Stirling (42) put on an opening stand of 89 and Ireland were 206-3 in the 39th over with O’Brien going well.

The Leicestershire batsman ended on a run a ball 75 but India hit back to restrict their opponents to 259 all out.

It was the fifth consecutive time that unbeaten India has bowled out the opposition in this tournament and their batsmen made light work of the chase.

Rohit Sharma (66) and Shikhar Dhawan (100) put on 174 for the first wicket and India went on to win by eight wickets with 13.1 overs to spare.

The result leaves Ireland in fourth place on six points and their final match against Pakistan promises to be a fascinating one.

If West Indies land a big win United Arab Emirates in their last game, the Ireland v Pakistan game could become a winner takes all because of the net run rate situation in Pool B.
