Pin Pals won their first title at the fifth annual Friends of Grace Road quiz on Friday evening.
A packed out Charles Palmer Suite saw 27 teams enjoying a fun evening as well as competing for the Pat Ball trophy, with Pin Pals emerging as narrow victors.
The team, whose name originates from Homer Simpson’s four person bowling team in the US series, was entered by Leicestershire CCC Cricket Operations and Communications Manager Dan Nice, club PA announcer Pete Saunders, Duncan Patrick and Kate Symeou.
Dan said: “We’ve put a team in every year and tend to be in the mid table pack given the competition is always high, so we very much enter for the social aspect rather than winning; namely a chance to catch up and to enjoy the excellent food.
“Our name is inspired by the many conversations that Pete and I have had about The Simpsons during cricket matches at Grace Road - although I did feel a bit like when Mr Burns claimed all of the glory when I was asked to go up first to get the trophy! It’s the first time Kate has come so she’s definitely our secret weapon!
“I don’t think any of us actually realised how well we were doing as Roy is good at keeping the scores under wraps, but given I’m in charge of the pencil, I knew we weren’t dropping too many points and was getting a gauge by the papers I marked.
“I’ve organised quizzes myself in the past so know how much hard work goes into it. Thanks as always to Roger, Rosemary, Roy, Mike and John, but also to the Friends of Grace Road as a whole for their recent donation of £12,000.
“The Friends of Grace Road are massively unsung heroes of our great club, and I understand that their recent donation will have a big impact, including funding the much-needed repair work to the dear old Milligan Road scorebox. The work will actually help Pete and I in our day to day roles over the summer!”
