REPORT | Poor weather meant that there was barely any play on the second day of the Specsavers County Championship fixture between Leicestershire and Kent.

Only 6.3 overs were possible at the Fischer County Ground and Kent progressed to 233-8 in their first innings.

There was a perfect start for Leicestershire as the dangerous Matt Coles (1) fell without addition to the overnight score, edging Clint McKay (19-4-61-3) through to Niall O’Brien.

Kent still hadn’t posted another run from 15 deliveries when the players first came off for rain and a frustrating period followed.

Inspections were planned and conducted by umpires Steve Gale and Russell Evans but a series of heavy downpours arrived.

An early lunch was taken at 12.30pm and although there were spells of bright sunshine, a shower was always just around the corner.

Play was eventually able to resume at 3pm after a mopping up operation by the groundstaff but again only a brief passage was possible before the players left the field again, this time because of deteriorating light.

The umpires kept checking their light meters but conditions worsened further with another spell of heavy rain, so play was abandoned for the day at 5pm.
