Rain Heavily Disrupts Seconds' Opening Day

By Pete Johnson

Leicestershire travelled to play Durham for their last SEC match of the season. Durham hosting the game at South Northumberland CC.

Only 31 overs play was possible on day one. Rain started to fall during the Luncheon Interval, as a result of which no further play was possible on the day. Durham on 90-2.

Joe Johnson, a member of LCCC Academy was making his debut for the 2nd XI, as was Joe ‘JJ ‘ Fielding, a triallist having had previous experience with Lancashire 2nd XI. Leicestershire’s side include six current members of their Academy, and must register as one of the youngest 2nd XI’s fielded by the Club for many years.

Nat Bowley captained the Foxes, won the toss, and elected to bat. Graham Clark skippered Durham. Heavy overnight rain had fallen locally, but play was able to start on time, thanks to the hard work of the South Northumberland CC groundstaff.

Alex Evans, and Josh Hull opened the attack for the Foxes. Harry Crawshaw, and Jamie Crawley opening the innings for Durham. Hull bowling a very frugal spell of 6-3-7-0. Umpire Noor at the Scoreboard End of the ground thankful that he only had the cap of Josh ‘Rod’ Hull to hold, and was not burdened with having to hold an emu as well! One for my older reader who will no doubt remember Rod Hull.

Leicestershire made a breakthrough in the 16th over of the morning when Uday Modhwadia, who had replaced Hull, trapped Jamie Crawley in front. Crawley (18) 55 b, creeping back to the Pavilion. Durham 42-1.

Luke Doneathy joined the left-handed Crawshaw. Sam Wood, having replaced Evans at the Pavilion End had success in his 4th over, pinning Doneathy (5) 9b in front. Durham 63-2. Wood claiming the final wicket for Leicestershire 2’s under Boris Johnson’s administration, as HM The Queen was about to hold an audience with incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss up at Balmoral.

In the penultimate over before Lunch Crawshaw went to his 50 (8x4) 87b. Durham went into Lunch on 90-2 from 31 overs, Crawshaw 53* Graham Clark 14*.

Four minutes before play was due to resume after Lunch rain started to fall. With no let up in the precipitation evident an early Tea was taken, and at 3.40pm play was abandoned for the day. Sam Wood 1-21 off 6 overs, and Uday Modhwadia 1-22 off 7 overs.
