Leicestershire CCC Academy graduate Rehan Ahmed has been named in the 15-man England squad who will head over to the West Indies to take part in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
This comes after the leg-break bowler was part of the Under-19s tour of Sri Lanka, appearing in four of the five Youth ODIs claiming six wickets and scoring 59 runs in total.
Ahmed burst onto the domestic scene in 2021 as part of an exuberant, youthful Leicestershire Foxes team in the Royal London Cup.
The all-rounder went on to take his maiden professional wicket in the game against Warwickshire, and post useful scores with the bat against Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Notts Outlaws.
On his call up, Ahmed said: “To be called up the Under-19 national squad for a global tournament is something that I have dreamed of.
“This is a huge step for me in my career, and I am looking forward to flying out to the West Indies and performing for my country.â€
Head of Academy, Alastair Maiden spoke on Ahmed’s hugely successful 2021. He said: “Rehan [Ahmed] going to represent his country in a World Cup is a fantastic honour and something that the Academy are immensely proud of.
“Hopefully this serves as the platform for our current Academy squad to take note and inspire them to make the same journey.â€
Ahmed is the latest in the long line of Academy graduates to break into the First XI at the Uptonsteel County Ground.
Leicestershire CCC Director of Cricket Claude Henderson is keen for the Running Foxes to keep producing talent through the pathways in Leicestershire.
He said: “Rehan [Ahmed] is the blueprint for all of our Academy and age group players to follow. He has had, individually, a superb 2021 and has reaped the rewards of his hard work and dedication that he has shown early on in his career.
“We are excited to have him as part of our squad for the 2022 season and look forward to seeing him playing for Leicestershire once again.â€
