Swindells Smashes Seconds to Success

By Pete Johnson

Leicestershire recorded a thoroughly comprehensive SET20 victory, cruising home winning by nine wickets.

Doncaster Town CC were hosts for the SET20 encounter between Yorkshire and Leicestershire. The fixture was Leicestershire’s 7th of their 2022 SET20 campaign, their record to date being won 3, and lost 3. Sam Bates skippered Leicestershire 2’s for the first time. Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat. Freddie Fairey an 18-year-old member of LYC’s making his debut for side.

Yorkshire were restricted to 122-8 from their allotted 20 overs. Skipper Jonny Tattersall (71*) 54b, his 50 (5x4) 46b. Will Davis was the pick of the Leicestershire bowlers taking 3-30 from his allotted four overs, 16 runs of which came off his final over.

All of the County bowlers used returned somewhat miserly figures in the context of T20. Mention also to keeper Harry Swindells who executed a superb run out, making a direct hit on the stumps at the bowler’s end, after gathering the ball some yards behind the wicket at the striker’s end.

Leicestershire reached their target in just 13.5 overs, thanks to an unbroken partnership of 112 between Swindells and Sam Evans. The home-grown duo’s 50 partnership coming up from 34 balls, and their 100 partnership from 64 balls.

Swindells’ half century (6x4/2x6) 29b. Swindells closed on 82* (7x4/5x6) 47b, Evans 34* (4x4) 27b. Nick Welch (3) 10b, the only Leicestershire batsman dismissed, run out, by a direct hit, when called for a quick single by Swindells that would have challenged Usain Bolt to make his ground.

Leicestershire winning by nine wickets, and moving to the top of the Northern Group, but Nottinghamshire do have games in hand on the Foxes.

Finally, a somewhat challenging day for the scorers, who had to go about their arduous task alfresco, combating the occasional gale force winds, and heavy shower in the process.

Yorkshire 0 points, Leicestershire 2 points.
