REPORT | Jamie Overton claims a second innings five-fer as Somerset earn their second win of the 2021 LV= County Championship season.
The visitors got off to a blistering start on the third day as Craig Overton struck with the first ball of the day, enticing Rishi Patel (27) into feathering the delivery through to James Hildreth at first slip.
Harry Swindells walked out to join Hill (7*) at the crease as the duo looked to re-build with Somerset with the wind in their sails.
The partnership looked relatively comfortable off the bowling of Overton and Gregory, prompting a change in bowling attack from the visitors as Jack Leach and Marchant de Lange were introduced.
Hill and Swindells were both looking in good touch as they eradicated the remaining deficit promptly, with Hill leading the way in terms of runs scored.
The Running Foxes ton, and the partnership’s fifty was then brought up as Marchant de Lange wildly overthrew to add four further runs on to the quick single off Hill.
Further boundaries came as Swindells used the pace and the bounce of de Lange’s delivery to simply lift the ball over the slips, and over the outfield, for the first maximum of the tie.
County’s number 23 the had his fifth consecutive fifty in his sights after sweeping the left-arm spin of Leach away for four down to fine leg.
Leach though, exacted his revenge from the very next delivery as he claimed the wicket of Hill (47) thanks to the Lewis Gregory who grabbed the edge at first slip.
Somerset would have been delighted to have claimed this particular wicket as Hill looked in wonderful touch as the Running Foxes were 126 for five as Ben Mike joined Swindells (31*) in the middle.
The Academy graduate duo successfully saw the Running Foxes through to lunch with County on 159 for five with Swindells (47*) and Mike (17*).
It took five second session overs for Somerset to make a breakthrough in the afternoon, as Swindells (49) was looking for his half-century.
The batsman flinched at a short Overton delivery and nicked it through to Davies behind, with Overton the man making the breakthrough with the ball once again.
Mike (18*) was joined in the middle by acting-Captain Callum Parkinson with County on 162 for six.
The seventh wicket partnership lasted just shy of four overs before Overton claimed his five-fer in the second innings, as he pinned Parkinson infront for four.
The Runnings Foxes had struggled for runs since the beginning of the second session, having only posted nine runs from the eight overs face as Chris Wright joined Mike (20*) in the middle.
Jack Leach then went on to take two wicket in two balls for Somerset, firstly, Wright’s wicket fell for 6 after nicking one through to Davies at wicketkeeper, and this was swiftly followed by a golden duck for Dieter Klein as he stepped down the wicket a drove straight into de Lange at mid-off.
Griffiths joined Mike (33*) in the middle to form County’s final partnership of the fixture.
The final wicket partnership lasted just over three overs before Mike (37) carved a Marchant de Lange delivery out to Tom Lammonby stood a deep-backward point who took the catch.
Leicestershire’s second innings came to an end on 199, leaving the visitors a chase of 115 in the remaining 47 overs in the day.
Messrs Banton and Lammonby made their way to the middle to get Somerset’s run chase underway as Chris Wright took the new ball from the Bennett End for the Running Foxes.
Banton would have been eager to better the 15 runs he posted in his first innings, however, Wright had other ideas.
The batsman only managed eight runs before Wright chimed in with a delivery that deceived Banton and clipped his off-stump on the way through, to send him back to the pavilion – a reminder from County that the runs still need to be scored.
Somerset were 10 for one as captain Tom Abell joined Lammonby in the middle.
County then had an opportunity to claim the Somerset skipper as he sat on six runs, as he edged through Ben Mike’s out-swinging delivery through to Rishi Patel at second slip.
Patel got both hands on to failed to hang on, and Abell had a reprieve.
Tea then came with the visitors having chipped 51 runs off the target as they headed in on 51 for one.
The final session of the day three was opened with the bowling of Lewis Hill from an attempt for the Leicestershire attack to try something different in order to break the second wicket partnership of Lammonby and Abell.
The attack of Parkinson and Griffiths that proceeded Hill’s opening over were still searching for the second wicket as Tom Lammonby posted what was a welcome half-century for him, which came from 63 balls and included nine fours.
The batsmen were in control and it was a matter of time before the duo secured the victory for Somerset, with nine wickets remaining.
