REPORT | George Rhodes recorded career-best figures in List A cricket before the rain interrupted the clash at the Uptonsteel County Ground.
The news from the middle at the Uptonsteel County Ground was that Running Foxes captain Lewis Hill won the toss and inserted the visitors on a warm, dry day in Leicestershire with rain forecast later in the day.
Paul Nixon made four changes to the XI that fell to defeat against Notts Outlaws on Sunday, July 1, with Will Davis and Sam Evans coming in for their first appearances of the season, joined by Gavin Griffiths, replacing Marcus Harris, Ben Mike and Chris Wright.
County got off to a flier as Davis claimed his first wicket of the season within his first over “ the second of the day.
Rutherford looked to clip the seamer away through the off-side but a brilliant one-handed catch from George Rhodes at backward point saw the Glamorgan overseas man off for an 8-ball one. Glamorgan were three for one as Reingold joined Selman in the middle.
The second wicket stand proved a tougher partnership to break as the Running Foxes were looking to capitalise on their early breakthrough.
After their first powerplay, the hosts were strangled to 31 for one, though both batsmen had faced a number of balls each as they stemmed the onslaught from the Running Foxes.
The duo lasted just shy of 10 further overs together before the stand came to an end just eight runs away from the partnership’s 100, on 92.
George Rhodes came in for his first over of the day and was the man to claim the scalp of Reingold, after trapping the batsman infront for 38(57b) after Glamorgan were well and truly back on track.
Two overs later and opening batman, Selman, recorded his fifty after pushing Rhodes down to long on for the single required “ the fifty coming from 60 balls, including three fours.
One ball later and the visitors’ 100 was brought up after skipper Carlson recorded his second run of the innings after following suit and pushing Rhodes down to long on.
Rhodes soon had his second wicket of the day as Carlson (11, 20b) was soon making his way back to the pavilion after being trapped infront.
Billy Root made his way out to join Selman in the middle whose innings was looking more and more crucial to Glamorgan’s chances of acquiring a result from this fixture.
Root got off to a quick start and soon joined his teammate in recording his half-century as he cut Griffiths away through backward point for his second four of the day, with the fifty coming from 47 balls, including two fours and one six.
Four balls later and Selman recorded his century after pushing Rehan Ahmed down to long on to bring up his ton from 120 balls, including five fours.
The next over saw the 100-run stand come up for the fourth wicket's partnership after sharing 120 balls, and 164 minutes in the middle together.
Two overs later and the fourth wicket stand came to an end on 123 as Rhodes chipped in with his third lbw of the day, after Root (67, 60b) was trapped looking for the reverse sweep.
Former-Foxes loanee, Weighell, made his way to the crease with Glamorgan on 244 for four, and the fifth wicket partnership only added one further run to the visitors’ total.
Weighell was the man to go, for a 2-ball nought, as he looked to go big off the bowling of Griffiths. The batsman lofted an on-drive high into the sky and Ed Barnes did well to keep sight of the ball, running in from the rope to take the catch diving backwards.
Three further wickets then fell before Glamorgan completed their fifty overs as the new batsman, Cooke (5, 4b) was next to go as he looked to pull Barnes away but guided it straight to the hands of Rhodes at deep backward square leg, who took the comfortable catch.
Selman was the next man to go, after recording an impressive 144-ball 140. The batsman looked for a quick double off the bowling of Davis, and Barnes at long leg was on hand to fire his throw into Harry Swindells at the strikers end who was left with an easy stumping.
Two balls later and Davis had his second of the innings as Cullen (2, 2b) looked to bring the final over to a close with a flourish. The batsman massively top-edged Davis’ delivery to backward point where Rhodes was on hand to peddle backwards and take the catch.
Carey (0no, 2b) joined Salter (1no, 1b) for the final three balls as Glamorgan ended their innings on 277 for eight.
As the players began to head back to their respective changing rooms, the covers were rapidly brought on by the ground staff as the rain descended on the Uptonsteel County Ground.
There were seven overs lost due to the delayed restart, with 43 overs remaining and the Running Foxes requiring a reduced target of 257.
Rishi Patel and Harry Swindells emerged to get the innings underway with Hogan opening the bowling for the visitors. Only one over was able to be bowled, though, before the rain returned and the players were removed from the field of play.
Leicestershire were 0 without loss after one over.
Despite a proposed inspection at 4:40pm, play never restarted but the rain did heavier than before.
Resumption in play never looked possible with rain once again descending on the Uptonsteel County Ground and was finally abandoned at 17:01 with only one over bowled in the Foxes’ innings.
The points were shared at the Uptonsteel County Ground.
