Leicestershire CCC is thrilled to announce the signing of South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder on a two-year contract.
The 24-year-old will return to play in all three formats after enjoying a successful maiden season with the Foxes, during which he claimed 33 wickets and topped the Club’s batting averages in both the County Championship and One-Day Cup.
Mulder became a fan-favourite during the 2022 season thanks to a series of herculean efforts, headlined by his career-best score of 235 not out in Leicestershire’s record-breaking innings at Hove in July.
The all-rounder hit top form with a stunning Royal London Cup campaign in August, registering 533 runs at an average of 88.83 and taking 14 wickets at 28.92, as he helped the Foxes reach the knockout stages of a List A competition for the first time in 14 years.
Mulder’s heroics included five fifties and one century from nine innings, while he set career bests with both bat (116*) and ball (4/47) in the victory over Middlesex at Radlett.
His limited-overs prowess became evident in the Foxes’ Vitality Blast campaign, where his introduction midway through the tournament helped the side finish with five victories in succession to record the Club’s best win tally since 2017.
Such white-ball form, complemented by an average of 49.21 in the red-ball format, helped Mulder to earn six awards, including Batter of the Year, at the Club’s End of Season Dinner in September, while the South African was also named as the PCA’s One-Day Player of the Year.
Mulder’s late-season form saw him merit a Test recall for South Africa’s series-decider against England at The Oval, where he added a 28th Proteas appearance to his name.
Currently back in his homeland with DP World Lions, the right-hander has enjoyed an impressive start to the South African summer, averaging 51.5 in CSA T20 Challenge, while he recorded his eighth first-class hundred in the Lions’ 123-run win against North West Dragons over the weekend.
Discussing his new deal, Mulder said: “I loved my time at Leicestershire this year and I really enjoy county cricket, so I’m very excited to be coming back.
“My teammates and the coaching staff have been so good to me personally, making me feel at home, so that’s a big reason why I’m back for more.
“We’re building a nice squad, it’s something I really want to be involved in. Hopefully I can contribute more in the coming seasons.â€
Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, added: “We are delighted that Wiaan has committed to Leicestershire for the next two years.
“He has consistently shown his ability in the middle across all formats, but he also adds a lot of value off the field, and we know his influence will make our side stronger.â€
