Wilson leads Ireland to vital win

Niall O’Brien’s Ireland made it two ICC World Cup wins out of two in thrilling fashion against the United Arab Emirates today.

The UAE, led by Shaiman Anwar’s well-constructed 106, posted a very competitive 278-9 from their 50 overs at Brisbane.

When O’Brien was dismissed lbw on the sweep for 17, Ireland were 97-4 in the 26th over and the UAE were on top at that point.

But a terrific 80 from Surrey's Gary Wilson, who shared consecutive partnerships worth 74 and 72 with Andy Balbirnie and Kevin O’Brien respectively, helped pull Ireland around.

The UAE kept picking up wickets to keep themselves in the game but Ireland eventually edged home by two wickets with four balls to spare.

* Rob Taylor's Scotland lost to England by 119 runs in their second match of the tournament before being agonisingly edged out by one wicket by Afghanistan in their third game.

The Leicestershire all-rounder did not play in those games after making his ICC World Cup debut against joint hosts New Zealand in the first fixture.
