A Hot Prospect | Scott Currie In Focus

Growing up on the books of Portsmouth FC’s Academy, he could quite easily have been lifting the League One trophy aloft at Fratton Park earlier this month. A goal-getter turned stump-splitter; Scott Currie is now vying for alternative silverware: the Vitality Blast.

As he gears up for his maiden T20 campaign as a Fox, we examine the quality and the career path behind one of Leicestershire’s hottest 2024 additions.

PLAY STYLE:

Standing at 6ft 5”, Scott is a towering talent. Carrying the ability to generate added pace and bounce, he is a nightmare to outsmart for opposition batters.

The 23-year-old is capable of bowling with equal effect during all three phases of the innings, whilst he’s also no mug with the bat if late runs are ordered, bringing an all-encompassing skillset to Leicestershire’s arsenal.

Predominantly deployed during the middle overs with the ball at Hampshire, Scott holds a canny knack of picking up wickets in what’s usually deemed a low-risk phase for batters, while his ever-improving variations at the death will also appeal to skipper Peter Handscomb.

STATS BOOK:

Only 21 games into a burgeoning T20 career, Scott has already made his mark in the Vitality Blast arena. He’s taken 28 wickets at an average of just 19.53, bested by returns of 4/24 in a 75-run rout over a strong Somerset side in 2021.

26 of his 28 victims have been out caught, demonstrating his ability to bamboozle batters into mistiming their shots by frequently mixing up his pace and lengths.

The Scotland international has only faced 18 balls in T20 cricket with blade in-hand, but his prowess with the bat is undeniable - as he’s shown with a 65.5 average in red-ball cricket for Leicestershire this term.

HERO HIGHLIGHT:

In a star-studded attack, containing the likes of Liam Dawson, Brad Wheal, Colin de Grandhomme, and Hampshire veteran Chris Wood, few expected Scott to be the standout performer of Hampshire’s 2021 run to T20 Finals Day.

After being left out of the opening six matches, the then-20-year-old made an immediate impact on his introduction to the side “ taking 4/31 at Taunton. Hampshire never looked back, and Scott featured as an ever-present thereafter en route to Edgbaston.

He ended the campaign as the Hawks’ top wicket-taker with 19 at a miserly average of 12.84, striking every 9.78 balls. It was a statement season that affirmed Scott’s ‘hotshot’ tag was to be taken seriously.

KEY CLASH:

A player well accustomed to the South Group of the Vitality Blast, Scott only has only appearance to his name against a ‘North’ county. But boy did he impress.

Figures of 4-0-16-2, featuring wickets in successive deliveries, helped turn the tide in the tightest of quarter-finals at Trent Bridge, as Scott helped Hampshire down Notts Outlaws by just 2 runs.

If he can replicate that kind of form when the Outlaws roll into town for Rivals Weekend on 14 July, the fiery fast bowler with further curry favour with the Foxes Family.

Spurred on by Finals Day disappointment of years past, the giant seamer is ready to elevate his Foxes teammates to new heights as Leicestershire chase the ultimate prize this summer.

His football days may be behind him, but Scott still has a clear goal as he helps Leicestershire shoot for a record-breaking fourth T20 trophy. See him kick off our 2024 campaign against Yorkshire Vikings on 31 May HERE.
