Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce the permanent signing of Ben Green from Somerset on a two-year deal.
The 27-year-old will rejoin the Club on loan for the final three rounds of the Rothesay County Championship campaign before becoming a full-time Fox on 1 November.
Following several loan spells last summer, Green has been an ever-present in Leicestershire’s four-day team this term, taking 31 wickets and scoring 328 runs to help fire Alfonso Thomas’ side to the top of Division Two.
His wickets “ which included a maiden first-class five-fer during the win over Gloucestershire in April “ have come at an average of just 20.9, leaving him joint-third in the division’s wicket-taking charts.
A formidable limited-overs player too, Green will add firepower to the Foxes’ ranks with bat and ball. In the T20 arena, he’s claimed 101 wickets at 21.34 and registered 821 runs striking at close to 140.
Such contributions have enabled Somerset to reach Finals Day for four consecutive seasons, including winning the Vitality Blast title in 2023, where Green snared 30 wickets at 16.66 apiece.
The all-rounder has also been a destructive operator in the 50-over format, where he has captained his home county on 12 occasions. The Devon-born star possesses a List A batting average of 48.66, while he’s picked up 28 wickets at 29.25 with the ball.
Discussing his move to Uptonsteel County Ground, Green said: “I'm so excited to make Leicestershire my home for the next few years and help to keep pushing this team forward.
“I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far. I’ve really gelled with the boys in the dressing room and with the coaches too. It’s been a hugely positive experience and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in permanently.
“I've seen firsthand how ambitious the Club is. Leicestershire are really looking to go places in the next few years, and I think everyone's pretty excited about what the future holds.
“We've played some unbelievable cricket and been so consistent this season. Hopefully now we can finish the job off in the final three matches.â€
Head Coach, Alfonso Thomas, said: “We’ve seen over the last year-and-a-half the skillset Ben offers, and we know he’ll add a lot of value to our side in both red-ball and white-ball cricket in the coming seasons.
“Ben is exactly the type of character we want in our changing room. He’s cool, calm and collected under pressure and has fantastic leadership qualities.
“He’s become a key part of our team throughout the season in four-day cricket, and we can’t wait to have him back for what will hopefully be an exciting end to the year for the Club.â€
Green is Leicestershire’s fourth new recruit of the week, joining Somerset teammate Josh Davey, Middlesex opener Stephen Eskinazi and Yorkshire wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Tattersall in putting pen-to-paper with the Foxes.
