Chris Wright Pens New Leicestershire Deal

Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce seamer Chris Wright has penned a new two-year contract at Uptonsteel County Ground.

The 38-year-old, who had previously agreed to join Sussex, will continue his five-year association with the Foxes after informing the Club of his desire to remain with Leicestershire.

Wright has taken 220 wickets, including 180 at 29.49 in first-class cricket, during his time with Leicestershire to date, as he closes in on 800 career scalps.

The veteran bowler led the way for the Foxes in the 2023 County Championship, finishing as the Club’s leading wicket-taker with 48 victims at an average of 27.43, as Leicestershire took their promotion push to the final round.

He also played a crucial role in helping Leicestershire win a first List A trophy in 38 years, topping the Club’s charts with 18 wickets at 23.22, as the Foxes lifted the Metro Bank One Day Cup in September.

Wright also enjoyed his most prolific year with the bat this summer, with his 350 runs headlined by an unbeaten 66 and a match-winning 40 not out as Leicestershire secured a historic win at Headingley, ending a 113-year wait for a red-ball victory at Yorkshire’s home.

Discussing his decision to remain at Uptonsteel County Ground, Wright said: “I am really pleased to be staying at Leicestershire. We had an impressive season and there’s a strong desire in the squad to build on that next year.

“It was amazing to be part of a historic day for the Club with our One Day Cup win, and coupled with our significant progress in the County Championship, it bodes well for the seasons ahead.

“Finally, I want to thank Sussex and in particular Paul Farbrace, for the way they have handled the situation. They have been really understanding about my family situation and wanting to be in the Midlands.”

Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, said: “We are absolutely delighted Chris has extended his stay with the Club. He is an exceptional professional and has an invaluable influence on our younger players.”

Wright becomes the latest Fox to extend his deal with Leicestershire, following Lewis Hill, Rehan Ahmed, Rishi Patel and Tom Scriven “ who all signed new contracts during the summer.
