Flora Davies has become the second Leicestershire Women’s player to receive her prestigious Gold Fox cap.
The 17-year-old batter was awarded the honour by Head Coach, Stephen Franklin, in a special presentation alongside her teammates ahead of Leicestershire’s Tier Two opener against Northamptonshire on Sunday.
All 11 members of the team were handed their Red Fox - upholding the tradition for debuting Men’s players - to celebrate the side’s elevation to Tier Two status, with Franklin, Assistant Coach; Anand Patel, and Director of Cricket; Claude Henderson distributing the county caps.
But Davies, who has represented Leicestershire since the age of 11, saw her new headwear adorned with a golden fox, awarded in recognition of her becoming the first Leicestershire Women’s player to score a hundred at Uptonsteel County Ground.
The homegrown youngster achieved the feat when making 102 not out during a seven-wicket victory against Middlesex in an Under-18 County Cup quarter final last August.
A precocious talent, making her debut for the First Team at just 14 years old, Davies has progressed through Leicestershire’s age groups, scoring a total of 2,319 runs at an average of 32.21 during her time at Uptonsteel County Ground.
Discussing the award, Davies said: “I am extremely proud and honoured to be awarded my Gold Fox cap. To join an esteemed list of Leicestershire greats who have worn the Gold Fox is a huge privilege.
“Becoming the first female Leicestershire player to score a century at Grace Road was very special. At the time, I was purely focused on winning the game, so I didn’t realise the significance until afterwards.
“It’s an exciting time for women’s cricket, especially at Leicestershire. I’m looking forward to continuing to improve my game and helping the team win as many matches as possible this season.â€
Davies follows former captain Katie Gunn in becoming the second female recipient of the illustrious honour.
