Geoff Hickinbottom | 1932-2024

Leicestershire CCC is deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of former wicket-keeper Geoff Hickinbottom.

Geoff spent five years on the county staff in the late 1950s. Primarily a wicket-keeper, the county were seeking a replacement for Jack Firth. Three players were in the frame; Ray Julian, Geoff Burch and Geoff.

Geoff hit the county scene during National Service, playing for the Army against Hampshire, in a team including three England players, not to mention all time county greatsPeter Sainsbury and our own Terry Spencer.

Army days over, he spent 5 years playing for the county 2nd XI in the Minor Counties competition as well as the 2nd XI Championship. Finally, in 1959 he got his chance in the County Championship. He played 5 matches, taking 4 catches, 3 stumpings and scoring 6 runs.

He continued to play county 2nd XI cricket as an ‘invitation’ player for several years, and scored an unbeaten 50 against Warwickshire 2nds in 1963, which included partnerships with Fred Foulds, Geoff Coe and Gerry Lester.

His club cricket was with Leicester Lindum, who he captained successfully, and of course his beloved Cropston where he supported not only the team but his son and grandsons so faithfully.

Our thoughts remain with Geoff's family and friends at this difficult time.
