Leicestershire kicked off their penultimate SEC match of the 2024 season on Monday, taking on Nottinghamshire at Loughborough Town CC.
Nottinghamshire had the upper hand in the first 2 sessions of play, but Leicestershire fought back after Tea, picking up the final 6 Nottinghamshire wickets for just 53 runs. Nottinghamshire making 387 in their first innings, Leicestershire closing on 27-2.
Although he has appeared in Leicestershire’s 1st XI, Alex Green was making his debut for Leicestershire 2nd XI.
Sam Evans skippered the Foxes, his opposite number Steve Mullaney winning the toss, and choosing to bat. Ben Martindale and Sim King posted a half century opening partnership for Nottinghamshire after 9.3 overs.
Some five overs later, King (34) took a blow on the helmet from a delivery by Green, and had to leave the field. Matt Montgomery coming to the crease. Martindale went to his 50 (8x4/1x6) 50b, Notts on 93-0 from 17.1 overs.
Martindale (55) 63b went stumped by Harry Swindells of Nat Bowley. Notts on 96-1 from 20.5 overs. Nottinghamshire into Lunch on 122-1 (29 overs) Montgomery 4* Tom Loten 26*.
In the sixth over after Lunch Montgomery and Loten brought up their 50 partnership (81b). Loten went to his 50 (7x4) 67b, 4 overs later. Montgomery and Loten then posted a 100 partnership, the score on 197-1 from 41.2 overs.
A couple of overs later Loten (83) 90b was caught in the deep by Nikhil Gorantla off the bowling of Alex Green. Nottinghamshire 209-2. Just 2 further runs had been added when Montgomery (31) 67b went lbw to Ali Farooq.
Travis Holland (24) 33b was the next to go pinned lbw by Bowley. Dane Schadendorf and Byron Hatton-Lowe then added a 50 partnership (36b). Hatton-Lowe went to his 50 (10x4) 34b. Nottinghamshire into Tea on 334-4 from 64 overs. Schadendorf 48* Hatton-Lowe 53*.
Leicestershire then fought their way back into the game taking 6 wickets in 19 overs. Schadendorf (52) 67b was caught at long off by Sam Wood off Bowley. In the next over Hatton-Lowe (60) 54b was bowled by Green.
In Green’s next over he had Fateh Singh (6) 9b caught at the wicket by Swindells. Green having picked up 2 wickets in 3 balls. Toby Pettman (1) 22b was bowled by Chris Wright in the 78th over. Nottinghamshire 371-8.
Leicestershire took the new ball immediately it became available, Roman Walker taking a wicket with the second delivery of the new ‘cherry’ when he trapped Fahan Ahmed (7) 26b in front.
Leicestershire wrapped up the innings when Sam Wood had George Burrows (6) 26b lbw. Nottinghamshire 387 all out from 84 overs. Steve Mullaney (6*) 5b. Mullaney being allowed to bat, replacing Sim King who retired not out, following a helmet strike. Leading wicket takers for County were Green and Bowley with 3 wickets each.
Leicestershire had 10 overs remaining in the day when they commenced their reply. Sam Evans (1) 12b went caught behind by Schadendorf off Burrows from the final delivery of the 4th over. Sol Budinger (22) 21b was bowled by Ahmed after 6.3 overs. Nat ‘the night hawk’ Bowley (1*) 15b and Jamie Dunk (3*) 12b took Leicestershire into stumps on 27-2 from 10 overs, trailing by 360 runs.
