Gumbs and Trevaskis Fire Seconds To Sensational Two-Day Victory

By Pete Johnson

Leicestershire’s 2nd XI completed a resounding 10-wicket victory, inside 2 days, against Northamptonshire on Tuesday.

An outstanding performance by Dips Patel’s side, with opener Sheridon Gumbs making a century and Liam Trevaskis weighing in with 5 wickets during a stunning victory push at Kibworth.

Louis Kimber and Alex Green came into the Leicestershire side on day two, replacing Liam Tew and Nick Green. The Foxes resumed from their overnight 204/5, Gumbs 93*, Usman Minhas 26*.

In the eighth over of the morning, Gumbs went to his 100 (208b), when he cut left-arm spinner Connor Haddow to the cover point boundary. A chanceless, patient, and solid innings from Gumbs, who, like his name suggests, sucked the life out of the Northamptonshire attack.

Just three overs later Gumbs and Minhas brought up their 100 partnership from 177 deliveries, the score on 230/5 from 74.5 overs. A fine supporting effort from Minhas, whose contribution was vital in the context of the innings and should not be underestimated.

Minhas (46) 96b was dismissed, caught at fine leg, after a further five runs had been added. Gumbs’ terrific contribution came to an end when he was trapped lbw by left-arm seamer Tian Louw. Leicestershire on 251/7.

A further two wickets fell - George Maddy (1) and Chris Wright (5) - before a sparkling last-wicket stand of 45 between Louis Kimber and Julius Sumerauer, both hitting a maximum during their alliance.

The partnership came to an end when Sumerauer (21) 16b was caught at the wicket. Leicestershire 322 all out from 95.1 overs, Kimber (39*) 44b. A lead of 207 runs as lunch was taken.

In the afternoon session, Northamptonshire were reduced to 133/6, still trailing by 74 runs at tea. Spinners Trevaskis and Kimber picking up two wickets each, with a wicket apiece for seamers Wright and Alex Green.

Ben Sanderson and Dom Leech struck up a 50 partnership after tea, but Sanderson then went caught behind by Harry Swindells for 27 in the first over of Trevaskis’ second spell.

One run had been added when Kimber had Connor Haddow (0) caught by Swindells. Leech (44) 44b, who had top scored for Northamptonshire in both innings was then pinned lbw by Trevaskis.

Louw and Louis Reeder added 49 for the tenth wicket before Reeder (28) 22b also departed leg before to Trevaskis, the left-armer’s fourth lbw victim of the innings. Northamptonshire 242 all out from 51.1 overs.

Trevaskis especially catching the eye with figures of 13.1-0-65-5. Kimber returning figures of 12-0-63-3. Wright 10-1-43-1, and Alex Green 8-0-45-1 the other wicket takers. The umpires’ finger being called into action for nine of the 10 dismissals, five lbws and four caught at the wicket.

Leicestershire required 36 runs to win with a minimum of 10 overs available, plus an extra 30 minutes if needed. George Maddy (18*) 45b and Jay Madan (15*) 32b saw Leicestershire home with ease. The Foxes recording a comprehensive victory by 10 wickets.
