Gumbs Impresses With Battling Knock On Stop-Start Opening Day

Sheridan Gumbs caught the eye with a battling 73 not out on a stop-start opening day of Leicestershire’s final Second Eleven Championship clash of the season.

Taking on Lancashire at Loughborough Town CC, the opener had to make no fewer than six starts with several rain and bad light delays disrupting the flow of day one.

Leicestershire closing on 161-5 with only 47 overs being bowled in the day.

Rishi Patel - skippering the Foxes - won the toss and chose to bat. Jonny Tattersall made his first appearance in Leicestershire colours, while three Academy stars - Arun Kalsi, Theo Marshall, and Ronak Rajashekar - made their 2nd XI debuts.

Patel and Gumbs opened the innings for Leicestershire and had added 34 for the first wicket when Patel (20) was bowled by seamer Charlie Parkinson. Tattersall (1) was soon afterwards caught at the wicket by George Bell off left arm seamer Josh Boyden.

An early Lunch was taken due to rain with Leicestershire on 63-2 from 17 overs. In the 3rd over following a delayed restart, Jay Madan (4) was run out going for a single, when Boyden threw down the wicket at the strikers end from mid-on. Jamie Dunk joined Gumbs and the pair formed a solid alliance.

After several stoppages for rain in the post-Lunch session, Gumbs went to his 50 (7x4) 112b, the score 113-3 from 35.4 overs. A couple of overs later Gumbs and Dunk brought up their 50 partnership (110b).

Dunk (39) 65b departed caught at deep square leg by Jaden Rose off the bowling of the pacey Tom Walker. In the same over, Sam Wood (4) was bowled by Walker. Leicestershire on 139-5.

16-year-old debutant Kalsi joined Gumbs, and batted responsibly taking the Foxes into stumps on 161-5. Gumbs (73*) Kalsi (11*). An excellent innings by Gumbs.
