Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce wicketkeeper-batsman Harry Swindells has signed a new two-year contract at Uptonsteel County Ground.
Swindells, who began his association with the Club at just 10 years old, hit a heroic hundred in September as he spearheaded Leicestershire’s One Day Cup final triumph over Hampshire.
The Academy graduate has featured on 95 occasions for the Foxes since his debut in 2018, scoring 2,585 runs across all three formats, including three centuries and 15 half-centuries.
Swindells’ match-winning 117 not out in the One Day Cup final, his maiden 50-over ton, rescued the side from a perilous 89/6, setting a new Club record partnership for the seventh wicket in List A cricket with Sam Evans in the process.
The 24-year-old also set Leicestershire’s highest ever eighth-wicket stand, posting 203* with Ed Barnes during his career-best knock of 171 not out against Somerset at Taunton in 2021.
The form of Peter Handscomb with bat and gloves limited first-class opportunities for Swindells in 2023, but the former England Under-19 international still displayed his red-ball prowess by leading the run-scoring charts for the Second XI “ scoring 362 runs at above 40 as Leicestershire lifted the Second Eleven Championship.
Discussing his contract extension, Swindells said: “It’s a great feeling to sign for two more years. The boys were amazing last year and it certainly made me work harder “ I learnt so much and tried to take that knowledge into my own game.
“The [One Day Cup] final definitely ranks as the top achievement of my career. To win a competition with your hometown club was incredible and hopefully we can earn more success in 2024.
“I feel confident as a player and I’m ready to kick on now. The final was a huge confidence boost for me, but there’s still a lot of areas I want to work on. I have a great mindset going into the winter.â€
Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, said: “We are delighted that Harry has extended his contract with Leicestershire.
“He has shown real fight and character throughout his career so far, perfectly exemplified by his performance in the final at Trent Bridge. We look forward to following his progress and seeing him replicate that kind of performance over the next couple of seasons.â€
Swindells becomes the third Leicestershire player to pen a new deal since the conclusion of the 2023 season, following Chris Wright and Sam Evans in committing his future to the Foxes, while the Club also announced Alfonso Thomas’ appointment as Head Coach on Monday.
