As the new county season dawns, Leicestershire County Cricket Club captain Ian Holland admits it has been “a bit of a crazy few days†” but the all-rounder is embracing the challenge ahead with calm assurance and quiet confidence.
Returning to Leicester after a productive winter in Australia, Holland steps back into the captaincy role at a pivotal moment for the club. Promotion has brought Leicestershire into Division One ” a stage unfamiliar to many in the current squad ” and with it, a fresh test against the very best in the County Championship.
“It’s been a whirlwind,†Holland reflects. “But the feeling around the group is really positive. We’ve had a strong pre-season, and the lads are fit, ready, and excited to get going.â€
A Winter of Preparation Down Under
While winter in the UK brought its usual chill, Holland’s off-season was spent in far warmer surroundings back home in Melbourne. There, he combined rehabilitation work with valuable match practice for his long-time club, Ringwood Cricket Club.
“It was important to get the body right again,†he explains. “Then being able to play club cricket back at Ringwood ” that’s always special. It’s a great environment to prepare and build towards the county season.â€
The benefits of that preparation could prove crucial as Holland leads his side into a campaign that promises both opportunity and intensity.
Leadership Amid Change
The build-up to the season has not been without disruption. The late withdrawal of overseas signing Peter Handscomb has forced a reshuffle, though Holland is quick to stress the unity within the squad.
“It’s a shame Pete’s not coming, but we fully support him,†he says. “These things happen in cricket. The important thing is how we respond ” and we’ve got a group that’s ready to do that.â€
In comes Australian international Jake Weatherald, a player Holland believes can make an immediate impact.
“I’ve followed his progress and he’s done really well. He’ll bring energy, enthusiasm, and a fresh dynamic. We’re excited to have him.â€
Building on a Breakthrough Year
Holland himself arrives off the back of a standout individual campaign, claiming 38 wickets and playing a key role in Leicestershire’s promotion push.
Yet he is not looking to reinvent the wheel.
“We played some really good cricket last year,†he says. “There’s no need to change the way we go about things. The standard will be higher, of course, but if we stick to our strengths and keep improving, we’ll be competitive.â€
That sense of continuity could be vital as the Foxes step into what Holland describes as “uncharted waters.â€
A Collective Effort
Central to Holland’s leadership philosophy is collaboration ” particularly with head coach Alfonso Thomas, affectionately known within the club as “Fonsâ€.
“I’ve always enjoyed working with Fons,†Holland says. “He brings a lot of energy, and that’s so important across a long red-ball season.â€
Despite holding the captaincy, Holland is keen to highlight the experience around him.
“The job becomes a lot easier with the group we’ve got. There are senior players everywhere, and everyone’s pushing in the same direction.â€
Eyes on Sussex and Beyond
Leicestershire’s return to Division One begins with a testing opening fixture against Sussex County Cricket Club ” a side Holland views as a benchmark.
“They’ve done what we want to do,†he notes. “They were competitive at the top end last year, and that’s where we’re aiming to be.â€
For Holland and his team, the opening match is more than just the start of a season ” it’s an early measure of how far they’ve come, and how far they can go.
“It’s a great opportunity to see where we’re at,†he says. “If we can put in a strong performance, it sets the tone.â€
