Jim Stone: 1930 - 2024

Leicestershire CCC is saddened to learn of the passing of Vice President Jim Stone, who has died at the age of 94.

A long-serving member of the Club, Jim became a Committee Member in 1983, serving for 20 years, including 17 years as Hon Secretary before he was appointed a Vice President in 2003 “ a position he held until his passing.

Having worked for Leicestershire County Council as a chartered quantity surveyor, Jim used his professional experience when playing an integral part in the construction and the development of the Mike Turner Indoor Cricket Centre at Grace Road in 1992.

A keen cricketer himself, Jim played for The Old Wyggestionians Cricket Club in Oadby, turning out as a more than useful right-arm seam and swing bowler from 1948 to 1986.

After stepping away from the recreational game, Jim was able to devote more time to following Leicestershire up and down the country as a supporter, and latterly as a Committee Member and Vice President.

He attended some special days in the Club’s history, including the Benson & Hedges Cup triumph over Essex at Lord’s in 1985, and enjoyed two trips with the team to Buckingham Palace as part of Leicestershire’s County Championship winning celebrations in 1996 and 1998.

Our thoughts are with Jim’s family and friends at this difficult time. Details of Jim’s funeral will be announced in due course.
