Leicestershire CCC Mourns the Loss of Former Coach Bob Simpson, A Cricketing Legend

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Bob Simpson, the legendary Australian cricketer and coach, who died at the age of 89 on 15th of August, 2025.

A giant of the game, Simpson was renowned as an elegant opening batsman, an outstanding slip fielder with over 100 Test catches, and a more than capable leg-spin bowler. His international career with Australia spanned more than two decades, before he went on to forge an equally significant legacy as a coach.

As Australia’s head coach, Simpson was instrumental in revitalising their national side ” guiding them to victory in the 1987 Cricket World Cup, regaining the Ashes in 1989, and securing a historic series triumph in the West Indies in 1995.

Simpson also brought his immense cricketing knowledge and passion to the English county game, including a spell with Leicestershire. Those who worked with him at the Uptonsteel County Ground remember a coach who combined discipline and professionalism with warmth and generosity. Players have described him as “a lovely bloke and a very good cricket coach” whose guidance left a lasting impact on both their careers and their lives.

On behalf of everyone at Leicestershire CCC, we extend our deepest condolences to Bob Simpson’s family and friends at this sad time. His influence on the game, and the positive mark he left on our club, will never be forgotten.
