Louis Kimber Named Leicestershire T20 Captain

Leicestershire CCC is excited to announce the appointment of Louis Kimber as the Club’s new T20 captain.

The 28-year-old will take over responsibility from Peter Handscomb, who was named as Leicestershire’s Club captain for the Rothesay County Championship and Metro Bank One Day Cup on Thursday.

After completing a stint as skipper of Loughborough University, Kimber signed his first professional contract with the Foxes in May 2021, scoring 2,770 runs and making exactly 100 appearances across formats for the Club since.

The Lincolnshire-born batter has proven a particularly dangerous operator in T20 cricket, boasting a mighty strike rate of 153.95 for the three-time T20 champions “ bested by a knock of 59 not out at Headingley in 2023.

Kimber also demonstrated his destructive approach when his astonishing 243, made international headlines at Hove last summer. The middle order power-hitter registered the fastest double-hundred in Championship history, scored the most runs in an over when he smashed 43 off Ollie Robinson, and broke Ben Stokes' Championship record by plundering 21 sixes.

He also played an integral role in Leicestershire’s 2023 One Day Cup-winning campaign, scoring 232 runs at an average of 46.4 as the Foxes ended their 38-year wait for a List A title.

Speaking about his appointment as Vitality Blast captain, Kimber said: “I’m over the moon to take on the captaincy for the side in T20 cricket. It’s a format the Club has been hugely successful in, and hopefully we can add to that this year.

“In terms of my biggest strengths as a captain, I like to think I’m quite a calm character, especially in pressurised situations out on the field. I stay level and always try to find different ways to win.

“We’ve got a hugely talented squad. I want to create an environment that allows people to thrive and in turn hopefully win games of T20 cricket for Leicestershire.”

Wicketkeeper Ben Cox will assist Kimber after being named as Vitality Blast vice-captain.
