County Championship cricket is back! After a successful eight-game T20 block, the table-topping Foxes resume their Division One charge against Glamorgan at Uptonsteel County Ground on Sunday.
Leicestershire made a blistering start to the four-day campaign, winning five out of their opening seven matches “ including the previous four “ to command a 31-point lead at the summit of Division Two.
Similarly, Glamorgan generated impressive momentum pre-Blast. The Welsh county won their last three fixtures to climb to third in the table, trailing second-place Derbyshire by just 11 points.
Squad:
Captain Peter Handscomb returns to the fold, while Ben Green is back after spending the Blast with parent club, Somerset.
Ian Holland is still away at the Major League Cricket, while Josh Hull isn’t quite ready for this weekend’s clash. Ben Mike’s workload is being managed on his return from a hamstring injury, so he too sits out.
Leicestershire: Ahmed, Budinger, Cox+, B Green, Handscomb*, Hill, Patel, Scriven, Trevaskis, van Beek, Walker, Wood, Wright.
Last Time We Met:
The catalyst for Leicestershire’s stunning opening half of the campaign was an opening round victory in the reverse fixture at Sophia Gardens.
After dismissing Glamorgan for 229, half-centuries from Lewis Hill (96), Chris Wright (74), Peter Handscomb (63), Sol Budinger (56) and Ben Cox (51) gave the Foxes a first innings lead of 198 runs.
Four for 46 from Ian Holland then set up a nominal chase of 51, which Rehan Ahmed (13*) and Budinger (32*) completed in just six overs to give Leicestershire a ten-wicket triumph.
Fox to Watch:
While Leicestershire have opted for a five-strong seam attack so far this season, this week’s fixture will see the return of the Kookaburra ball, which has historically tended to favour spinners. Step forward, Liam Trevaskis.
Conditions could well suit the left-armer, who has shone in T20 cricket during recent weeks. With control and guile, it’s puzzling he only has 38 first-class wickets to his name, but with an opportunity likely to be presented this week he could well add to that tally.
Trevaskis also adds a valuable option with the bat, averaging 32.27 in the four-day game. He scored 299 runs at 42.71 last term, including a half-century in the final game of the year batting at three, displaying his versatility.
Opposition Player to Watch:
Ben Kellaway can do a similarly effective job for the visitors “ boosted by the fact he’s ambidextrous. 11 wickets at 28.27 this summer is a promising glimpse for Glamorgan fans of what the 21-year-old can offer.
Plus, he’s leading the way in the batting average charts too. Kellaway has amassed 481 runs at 68.71 a time, much helped by his career-best 181 not out at Kent in May.
