Match Preview | One Day Cup | Derbyshire | 20 August 2025

It’s Derby Day at Uptonsteel County Ground, as Leicestershire take on Derbyshire in a must-win Metro Bank One Day Cup clash.

After back-to-back defeats, the Foxes will be determined to respond in style when the Falcons fly across the East Midlands to Grace Road on Wednesday.

Alfonso Thomas’ side know a win could see them jump up two places in Group A, while the visitors arrive one place and two points behind the Foxes.

Squad:

No alterations to the 14, with Liam Trevaskis hoping to overcome the thigh niggle which kept him out of Sunday’s defeat to Essex. Alex Green and Rishi Patel are also in contention to re-enter the XI.

Leicestershire Foxes: Budinger, Cox+, A Green, Handscomb*, Hill, Holland, Masood, Mike, Patel, Scriven, Trevaskis, Walker, Wood, Wright.

Last Time We Met:

These two sides haven’t faced each other in List A cricket since 2021, when Leicestershire kicked off their campaign with an emphatic six-wicket win at Uptonsteel County Ground.

Billy Godleman’s hundred helped Derbyshire to 275 for seven after their allocation, with Arron Lilley (3/49) shining with the ball.

A nasty looking injury to Nick Welch disrupted the Foxes’ early progress in their chase, but half-centuries from Rishi Patel (70), Marcus Harris (75) and captain Lewis Hill (51) saw them coast towards the finish line before George Rhodes (39*) secured victory with 21 balls to spare.

Decisive Duel:

Back fit and firing, Leicestershire have missed Ben Mike’s extra yard of pace and his mighty ability to clear the ropes at the death.

The 26-year-old looked the Foxes’ most threatening bowler on Sunday and was rewarded with two wickets in his final over. Plus, a promotion to seven in the batting lineup could give him the time he needs to make a destructive score, knowing he possesses the necessary firepower to clear the ropes with aplomb.

He’ll come up against former Fox and one-time teammate, Zak Chappell, in Wednesday's duel. The 28-year-old all-rounder can take the new ball or be introduced as first change, bringing a similar added degree of pace to the Falcons’ attack.

And, like Mike, he knows how to score quickly, holding a List A batting average of 28.18 while striking at a healthy 89.48.
