Match Preview | One Day Cup | Surrey | 6 August 2025

For the third time in four years, Leicestershire ignite their One Day Cup campaign with a trip to Surrey. The last instance was in 2023, and Foxes fans won’t need reminding what that opening round win led to.

Alfonso Thomas’ side, under the new guidance of captain Peter Handscomb, will be bidding to claim their trophy back after ending last summer’s campaign as semi-finalists following a closely fought contest with Somerset.

Leicestershire will also be looking to maintain their 100% List A record at Guildford, having beaten Surrey in the 1972 John Player League clash and in the 2022 Metro Bank One Day Cup opener.

Squad:

Handscomb captains the Foxes in 50-over cricket for the first time, with Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood featuring as Leicestershire’s second overseas star.

Ben Mike, Ben Cox, Alex Green and Sam Wood all come back into the matchday squad, with Liam Trevaskis and Chris Wright also aiming to break into the XI.

The Foxes will miss Rehan Ahmed, Josh Hull and Louis Kimber, who are all away at The Hundred.

Leicestershire Foxes: Budinger, Cox+, A Green, Handscomb*, Hill, Holland, Masood, Mike, Patel, Scriven, Trevaskis, Wood, Wright.

Last Time We Met:

The sides have faced off in each of the previous three One Day Cup campaigns. Leicestershire won the two opening day away meetings, but it was Surrey who won last time out “ taking victory at Kibworth by 17 runs last summer.

Batting first, Surrey’s top three did the business, with Dom Sibley (105), Ryan Patel (72) and Ben Geddes (61) all making valuable scores. Ian Holland (2/50) and Tom Scriven (2/51) the pick of the Foxes attack as the visitors closed on 296.

After his ton against Essex there in 2023, Sol Budinger looked destined to make it two centuries in as many matches at Kibworth, but when he fell for 70 (68b), Leicestershire’s fortunes faded. Scriven’s quickfire half-century (55, 43b) gave late hope but Surrey took the points.

Decisive Duel:

Looking to lead from the front, Foxes skipper Peter Handscomb will lock horns with new Surrey one-day captain Ryan Patel at Guildford. Both boast formidable records with bat in-hand in the competition.

Handscomb has 940 List A runs for Leicestershire at an average of 62.66, and finished the 2024 iteration as the One Day Cup’s leading run scorer “ tallying 539 with three centuries.

Patel has notched 1,423 List A runs at 45.9 since debuting against Hampshire in 2019. The left-hander was particularly impressive last season, ending as Surrey’s highest run-getter with 363 at 45.37.
